A ring is oftentimes a
symbolic gift, either to a significant other or for yourself. A ring can
be given as an anniversary gift, a birthday gift, or just something special
for the one you love. The use of rings has expanded with the advent of the
right-hand ring. Something specifically marketed to unmarried women,
right-hand rings have become very popular and represent independence and
strength.
A ring can make a big statement,
especially when worn on an all-important finger. Made in a variety of
metals, shapes, and sizes, rings are extremely versatile and are worn by
both men and women. The most popular use for a ring is for either an
engagement ring or a wedding band. The practice of giving
a diamond engagement ring as a sign of betrothal first began in 1477 when
Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave one to Mary of Burgundy. Now the
diamond engagement ring has become the customary token of commitment that a
man gives a woman.
