Originating from 1477, the engagement ring is the ultimate token of love and affection. Engagement rings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the diamond engagement ring is the traditional ring that is given. Recent fashions have started a trend in colored diamonds being used as engagement rings.
The practice of giving a diamond engagement ring as a sign of betrothal first began in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave one to Mary of Burgundy. Engagement rings weren't always made with diamonds, sometimes plain bands or bands with ornate designs are given as an engagement ring. The traditional engagement ring contains precious stones such as diamonds, but recent trends include giving gemstones such as sapphires and rubies as engagement rings. Sometimes a mixture of diamonds and other gemstones are set in a ring and given as an engagement ring. To preserve the uniqueness of an engagement ring, they are often custom made.
